ABOUT CO-HATY
WHY "CO-HATY"?
(HATY) – in Ukrainian, "HOUSES"
(COHATY) – in Ukrainian, “TO LOVE”
CO-HATY is a co-housing project for people who lost their homes due to war.
CO-HATY is evolving
CO-HATY is a project that emerged in response to Ukraine’s housing crisis that has been severely worsened by the full-scale war. The scarcity of housing opportunities became an urgent challenge, making us think: how could architects help?
Initially, CO-HATY was a volunteer initiative started by the METALAB team and relocated members of Urban Curators agency. We brought together a community of partners and invited volunteers to join in the restoration of the first abandoned buildings. Today, we are a professional organisation that creates housing and builds communities with love and dignity.
We implement architectural and urban expertise, cooperate with local governments and property owners, raise budgets for repairing and furnishing, coordinate the construction process, and design furniture for retrofitted spaces.
CO-HATY focuses on developing existing collective housing systems based on the principles of sustainability, accessibility, and transparency. In addition to renovating emergency shelters, we are working with partners to develop a model for affordable long-term rental housing, which currently doesn’t exist in Ukraine. This system will help restore the livelihoods of those affected by Russian armed aggression and assist in their integration into the communities they have relocated to.
We believe that housing is a fundamental human right. Therefore, we strive to create dignified and comfortable living conditions for Ukrainians with diverse needs and life situations. Our team has already completed seven CO-HATY projects, providing approximately 1,500 living spaces in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, and Vinnytsia regions.
